Following the earthquake of 6.8 magnitude in Sikikm, the Indian Army swung into action immediately by sending small teams for rescue and humanitarian assistance. Soon after, the army’s ‘Operation Trishakti Madad’, involving nearly 5,500 army troops and 700 ITBP personnel, got underway. They were engaged in rescue, restoration and resurrection efforts that resulted in 25 road blockages and five major landslides on NH-31A, between Siliguri and Gangtok.
