A team of 15 highly motivated and experienced mountaineers led by Wing Commander Namit Rawat was flagged off on June 20, 2012 by Air Officer-in-Charge Administration, Air Marshal JN Burma PVSM, AVSM, VSM at air headquarters in New Delhi. This team attempted to conquer the unexplored peaks in the Ladakh region, which has recently been declared open by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation.
So far the Air Warriors have flown over these peaks with great regularity, but now they will examine them much closely. IAF is aiming to promote the sport of mountaineering among its personnel and it also hopes to motivate the youth of the country to join the IAF. These unnamed peaks are situated in very inhospitable terrain. After their successful climb, IAF shall propose naming these three as Nirmaljit Peak, Arjan Peak and Subroto Peak.
