Dr.W Selvamurthy, Chief Controller, Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO) handed over four Nuclear, Biological and Chemical (NBC) tracked reconnaissance vehicles for Indian Army to Lt. General MC Badhani, Engineer-in-Chief, Indian Army at a flag-off ceremony in Pune. Manufactured at the Ordnance Factory, Medak with NBC instruments integrated by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), these NBC Recce Vehicles, based on the BMP-II amphibious Infantry Combat Vehicle platform, are equipped to monitor radiological and chemically contaminated areas. Various sensors such as Roentgen meter, Gas Chromatograph, Dosimeter, Solid State Anemometer and Chemical Sensor are integrated on to this vehicle. The vehicle provides protection to the crew while monitoring for NBC contaminants and can fix flag marks without the need for the crew to come out of the protected vehicles. Totaling eight such vehicles, the Army has placed an order for sixteen more.
