The ASSAM REGIMENT is an iconic representation of Northeast India. It was raised on 15 Jun 1941 to defend a crucial part of the Eastern borders of India against the advance of the Japanese. The Regiment draws its troops from the North Eastern states. The Regimental insignia is the uni-horned Rhinoceros, which belongs to the region and reflects many of the characteristics of the people of the Northeasttheir toughness, their martial qualities, their usual calmness and good humor changing to a frightening aggressiveness and determination when threatened or aroused. The unique cultural and tribal character of the Regiment makes for a fine combination of cheerful, tough and willing soldiers who excel in operations in all types of terrain.
Within three years of its raising during the Second World War, the young Regiment proved its martial prowess 
bywinning six Battle Honours and Theatre Honour Burma. Post Independence, 3rd Battalion the Assam Regiment won Theatre Honour J&K in 1947-48. 5th Battalion the Assam Regiment earned the Battle Honour CHHAMB and Theatre Honour J&K during the 1971 Indo-Pak conflict. This was the only Infantry Battalion to have been bestowed with a Battle Honour in Chhamb Sector in this battle.
In recognition of its martial valour, the Regiment has been honoured with three Theatre Honours, seven Battle Honours, ten Chief of the Army Staff Unit Citations, twenty five GOC-in-C Unit Citations, two United Nation Force Commander’s Unit Citations, one Ashok Chakra, two Mahavir Chakra, seven Kirti Chakra, five Veer Chakra, nineteen Shaurya Chakra, besides numerous other gallantry and distinguished awards. The Regiment has since grown to a family of twenty six Battalions and has established itself as a highly professional Infantry Regiment of the Indian Army. The Regiment has served with distinction in all operations since independence and in all types of terrains through the length and breadth of the country. The Regiment has also established its professional credentials in overseas tours of duty where two of its battalions were awarded the prestigious United Nations Force Commander’s Unit Citation in 2005 and 2008 respectively.
The Regiment has excelled in sports. It has won 152 Gold, 132 Silver and 110 Bronze medals at National level and 27 Gold, 17 Silver & 14 Bronze medals at International level. They won the ARA (Young Blood) Championship in 2005. The Regiment’s Marching Contingent was adjudged as the Best Marching Contingent at the Army Day in 1995, 2004 and 2012. In 2016 they won both Army and Republic Day Parade.
