Technological superiority has been, and continues to be, a cornerstone of national military strategy. Technologies such as Software Defined Radios (SDR), Night Vision Devices, Command& Control solutions have changed warfare dramatically. Today, the technological edge allows us to prevail across the broad spectrum of conflict decisively and with relatively low casualties. Maintaining a technological edge is vital as hightechnology weapons are now readily available on the world market. This is where Rolta, with its IPR led solutions, has provided several “coming of age” technologies to Indian Armed Forces, Police and security establishments in the last 30 years.
C2 Solutions
Rolta’sinnovative suite of C2 (Command and Control) Solutions manifests its over two decades of close collaboration with the Armed Forces that have resulted in a thorough understanding of the operating parameters and environs in which India’s Armed Forces function in peace & war.At the cutting edge of tactical battlefield comes the BMS (Battlefield Management System). Here, Rolta as a consortium partner with BEL has been selected as a Development Agency for the MoD’s prestigious Project BMS, a ‘Make’ category project worth over Rs 50,000 Crore. The fully indigenous BMS application provides commanders at unit/ sub unit level the wherewithal to enhance situational awareness and provide Command and Control aids for combat and logistics planning. It provides real time information of own and enemy forces, tools for realistic situation assessment and means to disseminate the command and control orders/ instructions. The BMS application integrates all surveillance resources available at the battalion or regiment level. It also provides accurate location of all the troops and key weapons platforms, as well as the location of enemy troops and terrain analysis. This will hence be a great force multiplier for Indian Army at the cutting edge of the battle field.
With significant investment in BMS technologies indigenously, Rolta will jointly work with BEL for manufacturing subsystems for the soldier system, the overall system design, integration, installation, commissioning and maintenance of the BMS solution.
ISR
In the field of ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) Systems, solutions from Rolta are deployed in forward areas under actual operational conditions. The range of ISR solutions include Photogrammetry/ GIS and Imaging solutions all integrated into a state of art workstation and used extensively for Intelligence gathering, Operational planning, Logistic move, 3D Terrain analysis / visualisation and as Decision Support Aids based on Analysis of the Terrain.
Constructive Simulation and Wargaming
It is said that if you sweat in peace, you won’t bleed in war. In this context, Wargamingoffers a smart and valuable tool which not only facilitates operational planning but also equips commanders at various levels with a comprehensive training application.Rolta offers an innovative Suite of Wargaming Solutions to train soldiers during peace, which in turn enables swift planning and execution during war situations. The suite caters for Wargaming requirements at different echelons of the Army.
Software-Defined Radio (SDR)
SDR is a state-of-the-art wireless technology to navigate a web of complex radio frequency and signal-processing technologies to render a seamless, reliable, and secure communications network that delivers the right information at the right time in an increasingly hostile electro-magnetic environment.By increasing the emphasis from analogue to digital and softwarebased signal processing, an SDR can accommodate various physical-layer formats and protocols, encrypt data, and convert digital-to-analogue signals with software running on a processor, DSP or FPGA, which makes it perfect for military requirements. Users can dynamically control the frequency, modulation, bandwidth, encryption functions, and waveform requirements. SDR also has the flexibility to incorporate new waveforms and functionality into the system, without having to upgrade or replace hardware components. These SDRs would be used not only by the soldier for data access and communicating back to the command centre but also for realtime Situational Awareness and Common Operating Picture among soldiers.Rolta is among the few Indian companies who have invested heavily in the development of indigenous SDR for Indian Armed Forces.
the enemy’s OODA loop through jamming his radios and radars at most appropriate moments. EW systems are also used for intercepting, monitoring and locating enemy’s radios and radars, which yield valuable and timely intelligence so vital for victory. Thus, command of the EM spectrum is as crucial as physical dominanceof the land, sea and air by other weapon systems. Here too, Rolta provides an extensive array of custom built EW solutions for Defence and Security forces.
Optronics
To help soldiers and commander overcome the night-blindness, Rolta offers a wide range of State-of-the-Art Night Vision devices such as Night Vision Goggles, Weapon Sights, Surveillance & Target Acquisition Devices and Platform Optronics. These devices provide an enhanced combat capability to the soldiers to perform effectively under adverse conditions of light. The components used in the devices are of high quality which produces a high resolution image. The devices are compliant to exacting international Mil standards and can, therefore, withstand the vigorous operating conditions. Easy to operate and user friendly, these devices can be used with minimum efforts.
Through a recently established Joint Venture (JV) with Meprolight, a leading international electro-optics company, technology transfer is envisaged for manufacturing and developing state-ofthe- art optronics devices based on image intensifier and thermal imaging technologies in India. This JV will leverage a broad spectrum of cuttingedge technologies in the area of optronics from Meprolight, and Rolta’s leadership position in India, to address large requirements of defence, paramilitary forces and state police.
Technologies for Counter Insurgency (CI)/ Counter Terrorist (CT) Operations Terrorists have been using not only the radios for their communication but also cellular phone and sometimessatellite phones. They also use the cell phones to remotely detonate IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices). All the technologies discussed above are being used extensively at appropriate levels in CI/ CT Operations to monitor terrorists’ communication, track their movement and prevent them from detonating IEDs. Wargaming system helps train junior leader even before induction. C2 system and optronics enhance battle efficiency of our troops in their ops against the terrorists.
With India looking to rapidly modernise its defence and security agencies, and increased emphasis on indigenisation, Indian companies need to deliver customised indigenous solutions exploiting the cutting-edge technologies. With its repository of proven IPRs, Rolta is very well positioned to take up the challenges.
