Admiral DK Joshi, Naval Chief and Vice Admiral Anil Chopra, FOC-in-C, Eastern Naval Command, embarked the combined Fleets at sea off the East coast on 13 Feb 14. The combined Eastern and Western Fleets were engaged in a month-long major exercise with a large number of participating units, including aircraft carrier Viraat and nuclear submarine Chakra. The two completely networked fleets, widely dispersed across the Indian Ocean Region, operated in a dense maritime environment. While missiles, torpedoes and guns were fired, this year’s exercise also witnessed the maiden participation of the recently acquired P8I maritime reconnaissance aircraft, as also the Hawk fighter trainer aircraft. Besides Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Airborne Early Warning helicopter of the Indian Navy, Air to Air Refuellers, Jaguars and SU-30 aircraft of Indian Air Force were also deployed during the exercise.
