Gunners Paradise

Talbahat military station is on its way to make its mark among the finest, writes Khursheed Dinshaw

Today, Talbahat has all the amenities, the credit for which goes to Brig DN Singh, commander of the Strike One Artillery Brigade, the man with an unparalleled vision and forethought. When he assumed command, the station demanded a lot to be done to bring it to its present befitting standard. Vini-vidi-vici, I came, I saw, I conquered have been aptly proved by him. The station boasts of an air conditioned auditorium, a staffed Kendriya Vidyalaya, socially active Sainik and Officer institutes, a well stocked air conditioned CSD, well maintained environmental parks, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, badminton court, basketball court, pool table, a golf course, walking plaza, family parks, open air restaurant, nature park and an aqua node.

Vocational training is being imparted in the AWWA vocational training centre to hone the vocational skills of PBOR and an AWWA shop has been opened in the Sarvatra Shopping centre. Taking a cue from the golden words of GOC, Strike One Core ‘Hum honge kaamyab har din’ Strike One Gunners have put their best foot forward to beautify the station. Rockeries and fountains have added to the elegance of the station. The walking plaza with soothing music and greenery all around mesmerizes. The effort of the Gunners towards the restoration of rapidly degrading environment is commendable. This polythene free station manages disposal of bio- degradable waste in an environment friendly manner. The dry leaves are not burnt but buried in the earth for their natural degradation.

The station is also home to exquisite birds and animals who have been provided a safe haven in their environmental parks. In their endeavour to keep the station clean and green, various tree plantation programmes have been organised from time to time. Their amla, guava and lemon gardens with the mango orchard are maintained and developed along with the cooperation of Department of Horticulture, UP State. The commander of this environment friendly station has also got heritage guns and war trophies displayed along the central road to inculcate a spirit of patriotism amongst all ranks and families. The Aqua Node that is located 1½ Kms away from the station is constructed on the banks of river Betwa. It caters to all the requirements of watermanship training and also poses as a recreational centre for defence personnel. The Lakeview Institute of Infomation Technology (LIIT) with its inverter back up is a big step towards IT literacy of the troops and their families. Equipped with modern systems and faculty, it also has an air-conditioned crèche to accommodate the children of families who come for computer classes. The Section Hospital is equipped with the latest technology and equipments, a separate air-conditioned dental section, an ECG room, artificial breathing system and a pathology lab, an air-conditioned ambulance and a well-furnished waiting lobby. This hospital is self-sustained to cater for casualties and emergencies like burns, snake- bites, diabetic disorders and cardiac arrests. Immunization programmes for infants are conducted periodically and rare medicines/vaccines are stocked at all times for damage control. Their formation library holds a 10,000 plus collection of books of all genres, various magazines and newspapers including regional ones. This voluminous make over of Talbahat military station by the Gunners has made this station second to none.

Fighting Foeticide

Female infanticide and foeticide is arguably the most brutal and destructive manifestation of the anti-female bias that pervades “patriarchal” societies. It is closely linked to the phenomena of sex-selective abortion, which targets female foetuses almost exclusively, and neglect of girl children. And creating awareness about this heinous crime NCC has taken a lead. In a first of its kind in the state of West Bengal nearly 500 Cadets, 14 Officers and 21 JCOs and NCOs of National Cadet Corps (NCC) group ‘B’ have pledged to fight female foeticide. The resolve was made at the recently concluded Combined Annual Training Camp conducted in Kolkata by 3 Bengal Battalion, Serampore. Cadet Pranita Halder said “She fells privileged to be born as a girl in this world. NCC has given me a mission to live for. I am going to fight female foeticide where ever and whenever it comes to my knowledge”.According to Col Dutta the Commanding Officer of 3 Bengal NCC Battalion “Female Foeticide and infanticide are heinous crimes which unfortunately still occur in our society. This is a small effort from my team to prevent its occurrence. We would be shortly launching an increased awareness campaign for other citizens as well”.
